Episode 91_ Tasty Pride, a Celebration of the Queer Food Community.png

This week’s episode is brought to you by Breyers® CarbSmart

We’re going to let you in on a secret: There are tons of talented food professionals who can perfect a coq au vin or make a sublime pasta. We’re not a rare lot, so what makes you gravitate to someone’s food or recipes over someone else’s? The stories we tell with our writing, recipe headnotes, ingredient choices, and social media. Food is about stories and stories are about people — and that’s why representation matters. This week, we kick off pride month with Jesse Szewczyk, author of Tasty Pride, to talk about the queer food community, family, representation, and how to be a better ally.

Families Come in All Shapes & Sizes

Food connects us to the people we love — the people we call family, whether chosen or biological, whether forever or in a moment.

In talking to Jesse Szewczyk about Tasty Pride, the new cookbook he curated in partnership with BuzzFeed Tasty, we were struck by the powerful relationship between food writing, recipes, and family, and how that relationship can be invisible to those of us whose family fits the “norm.”

As food professionals who focus on family, this week’s conversation has us reflecting on how we can up our ally game. We hope that it inspires you the same way, too, and that you will carry that inspiration beyond Pride Month.

About Our Guest: Jesse Szewczyk

Food writer Jesse Szewczyk | Didn't I Just Feed You, a podcast about feeding family

Jesse Szewczyk is a writer, recipe developer, and food stylist based in New York. His work has been featured in Food52, The Kitchn, BuzzFeed, Tasty, Bake From Scratch, Apartment Therapy, Jarry and several other publications. He is the author of Tasty Pride, a collection of 75 recipes and stories from the queer food community (Clarkson Potter/Tasty) that raised $50,000 for GLADD.

When he is not baking cookies or fluffing food for the camera, he can be found reading graphic novels, consuming excessive amounts of caffeine, and drunkenly cooking with his boyfriend.
