Description

Tis the season! This Gingerbread Syrup recipe is an all purpose simple syrup flavored for instant holiday cheer. Add it to your coffee to make a copycat Starbucks Gingerbread Latte, shake it into cocktails to make festive holiday drinks (hello gingerbread eggnog!), spoon it over ice cream, brush it over a simple cake or quick bread, or combine it with maple syrup to drizzle over your morning yogurt parfait, oatmeal, or waffles.

Ingredients

Scale

2/3 cup dark brown sugar

1/3 cup unsulphured molasses (not blackstrap)

1 (2-inch) piece fresh ginger, roughly cut into chunks

1 whole cinnamon stick

1/2 teaspoon whole cloves

1/2 teaspoon whole allspice berries, you can substitute a scant 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice

1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg, freshly grated recommended

1/4 teaspoon orange zest (optional)

Instructions

  1. Add 1 cup of water and all of the ingredients to a medium pot and, using a silicone spatula, stir to combine. Set over medium heat and carefully bring to a boil.
  2. Once the mixture starts boiling, reduce heat to medium-low and simmer for 5 to 10 minutes.
  3. Turn off the heat, but leave the pot on the stove allowing the ingredients to steep for another 5 to 10 minutes.
  4. Strain the syrup into a jar with a tight fitting lid and store in the refrigerator for up to 4 weeks.
